Authorities have confirmed that the situation has been stabilised at the N1 City Mall, after three suspects held up a Jet store for cash.

Reports rang out on social media after shoppers saw three suspects rush into the Jet store at N1 City Mall. Allegedly, the suspects shut the employees inside the store and held them hostage as they combed through the tills for cash.

There was confusion on social media about what was going on. Some thought that it was a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery, while others speculated that it may be a hostage situation.

Armed robbery at Jet store in N1 City Mall

We contacted the mall’s centre management and got a clearer picture of what transpired at the Jet store.

Natalie Dippenaar, the mall’s spokesperson from Word4Word Marketing, revealed that this was, indeed, an armed robbery and not a CIT heist or a hostage situation.

“On Tuesday 18 December 2018, at approximately 11.30am, three men, one armed, robbed N1 City Mall’s Jet store. No one was injured and no shots were fired.

“N1 City Mall security responded to the incident. The SA Police Services were immediately contacted and are currently investigating the matter,” Dippenaar said in a statement.

Luckily, there have not been any reported injuries or fatalities. We attempted to get a statement from the Jet store at the mall but could not get through.

N1 City Mall remains open for business

It appears that, at least for now, the store is closed. Dippenaar did, however, confirm that the mall has remained open under its normal trading hours.

We could not get through to the Goodwood police station for comment. However, we were informed by Dippenaar that investigators were on the scene combing through evidence.

At this point, we are not able to state whether the suspects have been apprehended. Although there are those on social media who claim that the suspects have been arrested.
