The African National Congress in KZN has defended its chairperson Siboniso Duma against sexism allegations metted against him following the Springbok trophy tour in Durban.

Duma came under fire from social media and political parties for taking the limelight and allegedly overshadowing Premier Nomusa Dube-Ncube.

ANC KZN SLAMS WOMEN’S LEAGUE

The party’s provincial leadership has also accused its Women’s League of attacking Duma without facts.

Provincial Secretary General Bheki Mtolo says they have messages from Dube-Ncube agreeing for Duma to lift the trophy.

“Nobhala and officials, please let’s not allow these detractors to play cheap politics at dividing the ANC and the public. We actually laughed with Comrade Mthombeni yesterday about the fact that he is the one that will match Elizabeth because of his height”, the message says.

Mtolo says as a party they are disappointed by the ANCWL conduct.

“Under normal circumstances, we would have expected the ANCWL to engage the ANC provincial leadership using internal processes instead of this reckless posture that is divisive and factional at its best”, the secretary General says.

“We call upon the ANCWL to do an honest introspection. They must assess the performance of its current leaders serving at the national level.”

ANC PAINTS DUMA IN A POSITIVE LIGHT

To prove their point the party has said that Duma has championed for women to be in leadership positions within the organisation.

  • He voluntarily informed the ANC that he was unavailable for deployment as Premier in the interim period. Instead, he suggested that a female had to be given a chance.
  • It is under Duma as the chair that the ANC increased the number of women in the provincial executive council from five to six.
  • Historically, Sibonisa Duma was part of the leadership core of the ANC Youth League that championed for the election of Nomusa Dube-Ncube as the Provincial Deputy Secretary of the ANC.
  • While Duma was the Provincial Deputy Secretary of the ANCYL he pioneered the election for the first time of the two ANCYL female Regional Chairpersons– namely eThekwini and Tolomane Mnyaiza.
  • As part of transition from the leadership of Sihle Zikalala, the collective chaired by Duma decided unanimously to submit three females to the National Executive Committee as Premier candidates.
