Over the course of the last 18 months, Santam, a well-known insurance provider, has been confronted with a troubling upswing in claims related to vehicle theft and hijacking, with a clear view that vehicles targeted are high-value cars.
Philippa Wild, the Chief Underwriting Officer of Santam, has been closely monitoring a disconcerting trend within the realm of auto theft.

“This trend revolves around the theft of keyless vehicles through hijacking and the utilization of car jamming technique,” he said.
Notably, the vehicles at the center of this criminal surge are some of the most favored among South African drivers.

According to German statistics specialists, Statista, who have compiled a list, there are six most hijacked cars.
The list of targeted vehicles includes
- VW Polo
- Toyota Hilux
- Toyota Etios
- Ford Ranger
- Toyota Fortuner
- Nissan NP200
Furthermore, according to expert insights, Toyota Prados and Landcruisers have also caught the eye of car thieves. Interestingly, even among Toyota’s extensive lineup, the Hilux and Fortuner GD6 versions remain highly sought-after targets.
