The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), has announced that they will be arresting the eight officers who are part of Deputy President Paul Mashatile’s VIP protection who were caught on camera assaulting two civilians on a Johannesburg highway.
IPID spokesperson, Robbie Raburabu says their investigators will be processing the suspects at the Sandton Police station following authorization by the Director of Public Prosecutions.
The eight members will be held in custody until their appearance in the Randburg Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
Earlier this month, a viral video showing the gun wielding officers dragging and beating three men on the N1 in Johannesburg, with the driver of the vehicle seen passing out during the assault, caused an outcry on social media.
The VIP protection unit officers were suspended as investigations into their attack were ongoing.
Mashatile’s spokesperson Vukani Mde, had previously said that the deputy president was not in any of the car at time of the incident.
