Investigation into Latoya Temilton drowning to be concluded in 7 days

The investigation into Latoya’s death will include a site visit at the venue and a review of CCTV footage.

Nchupetsang Inc Attorneys has been appointed to investigate the circumstances surrounding 12-year old, Latoya Temilton’s drowning. 

The Grade 7 Laerskool Queenswood learner drowned on Saturday, 20 January during a leadership camp. 

Circumstances around Latoya’s drowning were questioned, with the school offering little information to the family.

Nchupestang Inc Attorneys have 7 days to complete investigation 

After his visit to the school on Monday, Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane said Nchupetsang Inc Attorneys will have 7-days to complete the investigation into Latoya’s drowning. 

“The firm is scheduled to complete their investigation in 7-days, after which the recommendations provided from their findings will be stringently implemented by the department. 

More so, the law firm will interact with police to review post mortem results, and interact with the family of the learner, particularly on allegations that have been circulating publicly.”

Allegations against the school included instructing parents and learners to keep the incident under wraps, waiting for two male learners to retrieve Latoya’s lifeless body from the bottom of the pool, and not communicating with the family.

Latoya laid to rest in Mpumalanga over the weekend 

Minister Chiloane was unable to introduce Latoya’s family to the law firm conducting the investigation as the family have not returned from Mpumalanga following Latoya’s funeral arrangements. 

Latoya was laid to rest in Mpumalanga over the weekend. A memorial service for Latoya was held at the Pretoria primary school on Wednesday, 24 January. 

Nchupetsang Inc Attorneys will consult and interview all relevant stakeholders including learners, teachers, the principal, School Governing Body members, the School Management Team and the family. 

The law firm will also visit Wag ‘n Bietjie Resort in Witkoppen, the venue of the excursion, to interview personnel there, inspect the scene and review CCTV footage.
