Intoxicated hit and run driver arrested in KZN

A heavily intoxicated hit and run man was arrested in Kwa-Zulu Natal on Sunday afternoon, 19 March following a collision in Westham.

A heavily intoxicated man was arrested after he sped off following a collision on Lenham Drive in Westham, Kwa-Zulu-Natal on Sunday afternoon, 19 March.

According to Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) around 22:41 their members were on patrol in the area when they witnessed a silver Toyota Corolla colliding into the rear of a white Toyota Hilux bakkie.

INTOXICATED DRIVER TRIES TO RUN AWAY FROM OFFICERS

“Reaction Officers pursued the light motor vehicle after the driver sped off. Officers managed to box in the car approximately 500 metres away. The driver was heavily intoxicated and claimed to have no recollection of the incident.

“He did inform Rusa Members that he was consuming alcohol at a bar and recalled being involved in a crash shortly after he left. The rear of his vehicle was also damaged,” said Rusa.

OFFICERS ARREST THE INTOXICATED DRIVER

Rusa added that the 44-year-old was arrested and handed to the Phoenix South African Police Services (SAPS) for further investigation.

In a separate incident, The South African reported that a drunken driver and his three passengers were arrested after they tried to intimate metro police officers standing down on an accident scene on Wednesday, 22 February 2023 in Ekurhuleni.

INTOXICATED DRIVER RESULTS IN ACCIDENT

EMPD spokesperson Constable Marie Mashishi said when officers on patrol arrived at the scene, they found two vehicles had been in an accident.

Mashishi says both drivers were called. While officers were recording their details, they realized the 37-year-old male driver of the VW Polo did not have a valid driver’s license and appeared intoxicated. A breathalyzer/algometer test indicated that he was over the legal limit.

TWO MORE WERE ARRESTED AS THEY TRY TO INTIMIDATE OFFICERS

As EMPD officers were busy with the drunken driver, three passengers, a 30-year-old female and two males aged 35 and 36, from the VW Polo intimidated and interfered with the officer’s duties.

The drunken driver and his three passengers were handcuffed and arrested; They were taken to Rabasotho police station.
