Driving bulk trucks carrying cargo across the country is still one of the professions that is very much a male domain. However, at Engen, there are currently 16 women working as bulk truck operators.

Phindile Sithole leading the way

Phindile Sithole is one of these 16 women working in a historically male-dominated space and challenges perceptions and barriers. A woman working as a bulk truck operator might not be a common sight. However, nothing was going to stand in Sithole’s way.

In addition, she takes pride in her job and is thankful for the opportunities afforded her by Engen. Sithole explains:

“Believe it or not, I love the sound that trucks make and their size.”

Engen doing their part for #IWD2019

With this year’s International Women’s Day (#IWD2019) focused on highlighting and challenging imbalances in society, Engen’s Head of Transformation and Stakeholder Engagement, Unathi Njokweni-Magida believes that large corporates need to lead the way in addressing the barriers that continue to hinder the opportunities for emerging talented black women.

“Gender balance is essential for economies and communities to thrive. It’s not only a gender issue but a business issue which is why women empowerment and transformation is at the core of every part of our operations and forms a critical part of our business plan.”

Sithole’s story is one of many empowering and inspirational experiences. It will feature in the new TV series, SA INC, launching on 7 April 2019. Njokweni-Magida explains:

“The future is definitely exciting for our industry and the theme for this year’s International Women’s Day, #BalanceforBetter, resonates particularly with Engen as a company, since we make an effort to strive towards balance across the entire value chain of our business.”
