A Limpopo man has been sentenced to life in prison by the Limpopo High Court in Polokwane for an insurance murder, after killing a woman at the instruction of the woman’s mother, to claim a policy payout.

Ngoako Japhter Mabetlela, 34, was handed the sentence on Tuesday for the murder of Lebogang Prudence Lediga on 28 May 2020.

On the day in May 2020, after Mabetlela entered Lediga’s home and strangled her to death, Lediga’s mother tampered with the body by washing it and changing its clothes before the police arrived, according National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA’s) Limpopo spokesperson, Mashudu Malabi-Dzhangi.

Premeditated insurance murder

“The accused [Mabetlela] killed the deceased [Lediga] at the request of her mother in exchange for payment. The deceased’s mother was motivated by the financial gain from the insurance payout,” Malabi-Dzhangi said in a statement.

Ahead of Mabetlela’s sentencing, the NPA said the prosecutor – advocate Malebo Maleka – told the court in aggravation of sentence that “the deceased died a painful death and that the offence was premeditated”.

Maleka also lamented that Mabetlela had the opportunity to tell police about Lediga’s mother’s role in the murder, but instead chose to remain silent, in hopes of still receiving his share from the insurance payout.

Lediga’s mother is already serving a 20-year sentence after she pleaded guilty last year, said the Malabi-Dzhangi.

The couple have been charged with the murder of Lerato’s former boyfriend Sibusiso Sithebe.

The state, as per Sowetan’s reporting, claims the Mahlangus killed and burned Sithebe’s body, then pretended it was Sibusiso who had perished. Afterwards, the state says, the Mahlangus told Home Affairs that Sibusiso had died and started the process to claim insurance money.
