No more cold drinks for JMPD officers, a causal title when referring to a bribe, this as the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers will soon be equipped with body cameras.

These will be used to record criminal activities, such as collecting bribes, according to eNCA.

JMPD Acting Chief Angie Mokasi said body cameras will not only fight corruption but will also help protect officers and the community, eNCA reported.

JMPD RESPONSE TO THE TECHNOLOGICAL INVESTMENT

In the interview, Mokasi said, “We have invested a lot of resources in internal affairs. We are purchasing body cameras that will assist in issues around corruption, They will also protect our officers and protect the public. We believe this will eradicate corruption.”

The idea of this equipment is not a new phenomenon as it has been tried out in the past.

EASTER SAFETY CAMPAIGN OF 2021

In the 2021 Easter Safety campaign by then Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbulala, announced the promotion of the equipment.
Motorists were warned that they can’t talk themselves out of any traffic violations during that Easter period because traffic officers would be issued with body cameras that will record their every move.

It was reported that the traffic officers would be issued with body cameras to support them in evidence gathering and improve the conviction rate for violations of traffic laws. In a statement, the department said the use of e-enforcement would enhance road safety for all road users, especially motorists.
