A husband killed his wife before turning the gun on himself at Voëlklip in George on Sunday afternoon.

POLICE WERE ALERTED OF THE SHOOTING LATE ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON

Police spokesperson Captain Malcolm Pojie told the media that the shooting happened around 16:30 on Sunday.

“Police have opened a murder as well as an attempted murder case following a shooting incident at Voëlklip.”

He said a passerby discovered the body of a man with his wife seated next to him on a bench in a critical condition at around 16:30.

Both had gunshot wounds to their heads.

THE COUPLE WAS FOUND SEATED ON A BENCH

Pojie said the wife was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition.

“It is believed that the couple in their mid to late seventies walked from their home in Herold’s Bay to one of the lookout points at Voëlklip. It’s further alleged that the husband first shot his wife and thereafter himself.”

No further information is available at this stage.

Voëlklip has become the pinnacle of tragedies.

THE PINNACLE OF TRAGEDIES

Last month, a woman who was reported missing was killed when her vehicle recently went over the notorious Voëlklip cliff.

Jessica Hapgood-Strickland, her daughter, confirmed on Wednesday morning to The South African that it is indeed her mother, 57-year-old Jo-Anne Lourens from Delville Park, who went missing on Thursday, 17 March.

“We were notified about the accident on Tuesday. Then the officer took us to the scene. It is my mother,” Hapgood-Strickland said.
