A five-year-old girl has been returned to the care of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development, after being on board a hijacked vehicle in KwaMaphumulo.

According to the department, the child was in the care of one of its social workers, when the vehicle they were travelling in, a department issued Toyota single cab, was hijacked at around 20:40 on Thursday evening.

The social worker was en route to return the girl to one of the departments children’s homes.

“Unfortunately, the social worker was in the company of a five-year-old girl, who was a resident of one of our homes and was transported home. The hijackers made off with the child on board” the department said.

LITTLE GIRL FOUND ALIVE

In a turn of luck, in a statement the department announced that the girl had been returned to their care the very next morning.

“The child has been alive found dumped next to Department of Social Development offices in Greytown. They are taking her to hospital for examination” the department said.

It remains unknown whether or not the child was harmed by the hijackers.
