A land grab attempt by citizens in Hermanus has been broken up, thanks to intervention from the Red Ants.

News 24 report that the group – who started marking out individual lots on vacant land – then marched to the office of the local municipal manager, demanding that they should have access to water and electricity.

Hermanus land grab

Dewaal Steyn, editor for The Hermanus News, confirmed that a group of about 200 people from Zwelihle protested outside the municipal offices on Friday.

It didn’t take long for Coenie Groenewald to reject their demands. He maintained that any land grab operation is highly illegal, and has already been condemned by President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Groenewald also stated that “several housing projects” are underway in the municipality, and stressed that everything is being done to home those without property.

The Red Ants security services made their way into the Overberg region on Friday. They were able to evict those occupying the land, and restored law and order to the area.

Land expropriation under the microscope

This incident comes at a highly sensitive time for land ownership in South Africa. The Presidency is holding firm on plans to drive expropriation without compensation. However, it’s a move that has caught international attention.

Politicians across the world – most notably, Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton – are strongly opposed to the idea, and even went as far as to propose fast-track visas for “white South African farmers” affected by land redistribution.

EFF proportional representation councillor in Overstrand Benet Molefe has distanced his party from this incident. He stated that he wouldn’t “take credit” for something that he did not do.
