Healthcare workers ordered to return to work

Healthcare workers have been ordered to return to work after the Gauteng Department of Health obtained a court interdict

The Gauteng Department of Health (GDOH) obtained a court interdict against the National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU) at the Johannesburg Labour Court, and ordered healthcare workers to return to work.

Gauteng health orders healthcare workers to return

The interdict prohibits NEHAWU members from obstructing the rendering of health services to patients.

As a result, the GDOH issued a circular and called on its employees to return to work.

This was with immediate effect.

Failure to report to work will result in the application of the No Work No Pay principle.

Employees ensured a safe and intimidation-free working environment

After engagements with law enforcement agencies, the GDOH can now assure its employees of a safe and intimidation-free working environment.

The court order instructed the South African Police Service to take all necessary steps to remove and expel any person from properties and premises of GDOH.

Protesting employees were warned by GDOH to stop obstructing the rendering of health services to patients and causing damage to property, as this is in contravention of the court order and will result in disciplinary action against offenders.
