The Directorate for Priority Crime (DPCI), better known as the Hawks, has announced a host of new appointments at various levels of the specialist unit’s structure, with new provincial heads in place effective immediately.
The new heads of departments will be overseeing provincial progress, as well as Serious Commercial Crime and Serious Organised Crime, with new leadership roles assigned to members in the forensic investigation departments.
The following members of the Hawks have been installed as various Hawks offices around the country, and their full résumés are available here:
The new appointees boast considerable experience, with the shortest serving member (Brigadier Mafiwa Mmekwa, KZN) having served 10 years in the police force, and the longest serving appointment (Brigadier Frederick Smith, Gauteng) having served nearly 40 years in the police service.
National Head of the Hawks, Lieutenant General Godfrey Lebeya, welcomed the new appointments.
“The appointments of the Provincial Heads have been made following the necessary selection process and subsequently the concurrence with Cabinet as provided for in terms of section 17CA(6) of the South African Police Service Act 68 of 1995,” he said.
“[I urge] the management team and all DPCI members to support the new appointees in ensuring and realise the Directorate mandate which is to prevent, combat and investigate national priority offences, in particular Serious Organised Crime, Serious Commercial Crime and Serious Corruption as set out in Chapter 6A of the South African Police Service Act.”
