Civil rights organisation AfriForum welcomed the arrest of the Gupta brothers Atul and Rajesh on Monday in Dubai.

Although there is a long way to go AfriForum has said that this is a step in the direction of justice, and it has some demands that will help justice prevail.

AFRIFORUM HAS DEMANDS ON THE GUPTA’S CASE

In a statement AfriForum said, South Africa and the United Arab Emirates signed an extradition agreement in April 2021, but it is not yet clear whether the arrest will lead to the brothers’ return to South Africa.

AfriForum, therefore, has demanded that the Gupta brothers get their day in court in South Africa. Adding that a proper investigation must be conducted into the ties between the Guptas and South African politicians.

They said the situation must be closely monitored so that the Guptas cannot slip away in a dubious way.

“The country has been paralyzed for years by unprecedented levels of corruption and millions have become discouraged with the lack of culprits that face the consequences for their long fingers.

“The longer corruption continues unabated in South Africa, the more the population loses confidence that the government is at all capable of fighting corruption,”

said Ernst van Zyl, Campaign Officer for Strategy and Content.

He added that the arrest of the Guptas should be a starting point and not an end point.

Furthermore, van Zyl said the serious recent allegations against President Cyril Ramaphosa must also be properly investigated. There can be a focus on more than one high-profile corruption case at a time.

“It is about time that corruption is tackled, regardless of the profile, political faction or position of the accused,”

concluded van Zyl

GUPTA BROTHERS ARRESTED

Meanwhile, on Monday evening, the Ministry of Justice confirmed the arrest of notorious Gupta brothers – Rajesh and Atul.

Department spokesperson Chrispin Phiri said the South African government received information from law enforcement authorities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) that the Gupta brothers had been arrested.

“Discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa on the way forward are ongoing. The South African government will continue to cooperate with the UAE,”

said Phiri.

The International Criminal Police Organisation (Interpol) issued a red notice for Rajesh and Atul who are believed to be the masterminds behind the alleged State Capture project in South Africa earlier this year.

Dubai police have since confirmed the arrest as well.
