Four Groenvlei Combined learners killed, 7 injured in car accident

Groenvlei Combined School learners who had attended a wedding were involved in a car accident on their way home. Sadly, four were killed.

Four learners aged between 14 and 16 years from Groenvlei Combined School under the Amajuba District have died after they were involved in a car accident.

The accident happened on Monday, 2 October.

GROENVLEI COMBINED SCHOOL LEARNERS DIE IN CAR ACCIDENT

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, the learners met their tragic demise in the early hours of Monday morning in an accident on the local gravel roads of Hattang.

The learners were en route home following a wedding ceremony they had attended over the weekend.

A total number of 11 learners travelling in the same vehicle are reported to have been rushed to nearby hospitals, where they are being treated for injuries.

KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi said that there were approximately 30 commuters in the vehicle, some of whom were members of the Hattang community.

The cause of the accident is unknown at this stage, but authorities in the Transport Department are probing the matter further.

KZN Education MEC Mbali Frazer said she is constantly praying for children’s safety, and such heartbreaking news deeply saddened her because, at all times, they anticipate a bright future for all the learners.

“We also wish the learners who sustained injuries during the accident a speedy recovery. We want to offer our most sincere
condolences to the bereaved families. May God heal their wounds and comfort their shattered hearts,” Frazer said.
