What sparked the Johannesburg blaze?

Initially, the fire’s exact cause was unknown. House fires are common in South Africa due to frequent power outages, widespread poverty, and homelessness. Authorities proposed that candles or heating devices might have started the fire.

The building, which has been evacuated, was situated in what used to be the business district of South Africa’s economic hub and had been informally occupied by squatters in violation of the law, according to authorities.

“Many burned bodies were found stashed at that gate.” During the day, firefighters damped down hotspots as emergency services laid dead bodies under blankets on the street outside.
