Rand Water issued a statement that burst water pipeline will only be repaired on Monday afternoon. The pipeline is affecting residents of large parts of Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni, it is taking longer than usual to repair the damage.
Initially, the pipe burst on Friday and taps started running dry on Saturday. It was said that a plan that would allow water to flow was being devised.
Executive manager of a water treatment plant in the south of Gauteng; Eddie Singo had initially stated that water would be flowing by Sunday evening after he said they suspected that the pipe may have been tampered with.
“It is not necessarily broken; you can see that blots have been removed and it’s something that we want to confirm. We are also suspecting tempering because all the valve boxes along the line were broken into,”
Eddie Singo
In an earlier statement, Rand Water said the burst portion on the O2 pipeline had been exposed overnight, it appeared that a valve on the pipeline was vandalised
“Following our earlier communication on Sunday morning; upon accessing the pipe and on proper inspection, we, unfortunately, found that the pipe was damaged more than what was initially expected and reported.”

There is a plan in place to provide residents with water tanks. The exact location of the tankers would be provided by the respective municipalities. Rand Water further apologised for the inconvenience this may have caused and urged residents to continue using water sparingly as they continue to work in aims to restore the supply was underway.
“The latest estimated completion of the work is tomorrow afternoon. Should the situation improve or get worse, the public will be informed accordingly. Together with Johannesburg Water and the City of Ekurhuleni we are making provision for water takers.”
