The South African Police have mobilised resources following after 11 people have been shot and two killed in gang violence in Westbury and Newsclare since Friday, 24 February 2023.

RESIDENTS FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES

Police Spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Sello says six shooting incidents have been reported since Friday night, 24 February 2023.

During these gang-related incidents in Westbury and Newclare, 11 people were shot, and two died in gang violence.

POLICE MOBILISED TO END GANG VIOLENCE

Police Provincial Commissioner of Gauteng, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, has since mobilised resources following six shooting incidents related to alleged gang violence in Westbury and Newclare.

The circumstances surrounding all incidents remain unclear, and police are continuing investigations.

POLICE ARRESTED ONE SUSPECT FOR GANG VIOLENCE

“The police are following up on any information received, and one suspect has since been arrested for a case of attempted murder,” says Sello.

While police mobilised resources and manpower, they are pleading with the community of Westbury and surrounding areas to please work together with the police in ensuring that the perpetrators are arrested.

However, community members told eNCA this morning there was not enough police visibility and have appealed to the police to send in more vans. They also appealed to the government to send an army to end the violence.

GANG VIOLENCE CLAIMED TWO LIVES

They say they fear going outside, to the shops, and even sending their children to school.
