South African motorists are in for a tough time as they brace themselves for another surge in the price of fuel in April.

Unfortunately, this will be the third consecutive month of price hikes.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) recently released its monthly statement, indicating that petrol 93 will increase by 65 cents per litre, petrol 95 will go up by 67 cents per litre, and diesel 0.05% by 3 cents per litre.

However, there is some good news, as the price of diesel 0.005%, illuminating paraffin, and LP Gas will experience a decrease of 2 cents per litre, 29 cents per litre, and 19 cents per kg, respectively.

Motorists would have been hoping for some relief, especially after the challenges of the pandemic and the economic downturn.

With many motorists travelling during the Easter long weekend, the fuel price increase could have a financial impact on their journeys.

Minister of Mineral Resources & Energy Gwede Mantashe the fuel prices were based on current and international factors.

Motorists will be affected by yet another fuel price increase

“South Africa’s fuel prices are adjusted monthly, informed by international and local factors. International factors include the fact that South Africa imports both crude oil and finished products at a price set at the international level, including importation costs,” Mantashe said.

He further stated that the adjustments were primarily influenced by crude oil prices, international petroleum product prices, the Rand/US Dollar exchange rate, Fuel Levy, Road Accident Fund (RAF), Carbon Fuel Levy, revised road and pipeline transport tariffs, octane differentials between 95 and 93 petrol grades, and the implementation of the Slate Levy.
