Five people were killed and several others injured in a multi-vehicle accident on the N1 outside Polokwane on Friday.
According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the accident happened on Friday afternoon on the N1 near Mookgophong, approximately 120km outside Polokwane.
“Paramedics arrived to find the Provincial Fire and EMS already tending to the patients. The local authorities had already closed off the road and were diverting traffic. Five light motor vehicles were seen scattered across the highway,” he said.
Meiring said paramedics assessed the patients and found that four had already succumbed to their numerous injuries and were declared dead on the scene by the Provincial medics.
Four other people were critically injured.
“Paramedics treated the patients and provided them with advanced life support interventions.
“Unfortunately, during treatment, one critical patient succumbed to their injuries and was declared dead,” Meiring said.
He added that once the remaining patients were treated, they were transported to a nearby hospital for further care.
“The details surrounding this incident are unknown, but local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” Meiring concluded.
Meanwhile, the latest figures on the road deaths, which were released by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula, show that fatalities have risen in five provinces with exception of the Free State, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu Natal and Limpopo.
The breakdown on road deaths is as follows in these provinces:
“Despite these grim statistics, it is important to note that thousands of road users continue to respect the law and obey the rules of the road. This is a responsibility we must all take seriously in order to make a difference and ensure that our roads are safe to travel on,” Mbalula said.
