The City of Johannesburg law enforcement agencies will be on high alert on the New Year’s Eve to monitor the use of fireworks as illegal use constitutes to hefty fines or arrest.
CITY OF JOBURG PROBLEM WITH FIREWORKS
According to the City of Joburg, fireworks have been a contentious matter around the festive season. The noise released by firecracker devices is extremely loud.
“The offender can be arrested and will be charged for disturbance of peace.”

JMPD TO ISSUE FINES OR ARREST OFFENDERS
In addition, the loud ‘boom and bang’ sounds released by firecrackers can be health risks to both human beings and animals as they release toxic substances into the air, the City warned.

Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) will be conducting operations regarding the illegal use of firecrackers this festive season.
“Fines have been put into place to ensure that fireworks by-laws are adhered to by all who reside, visit and work in the city of Johannesburg. JMPD may impound firecrackers if any dealer does not adhere to the conditions of the fireworks license,” the City further warned.

FINE VS OFFENCE
Fines worth R1000.00:
- Anyone who ignites firecrackers near animals.
- Anyone who ignites fire crackers near hospitals and old age homes.

Fines worth R1500.00:
- Anyone igniting firecrackers within 500 meters of a petrol station.
- Permitting /allowing a minor to light or ignite fireworks.
- Failing to obtain permission for fireworks display and to comply with the terms and conditions of fireworks Permission.
- Failing to ensure that fireworks display be presented only on suitable premises designated by the council and under the supervision and control of an official designated by the council.
- Failing to ensure that the fireworks license in terms of the explosive act and written authority of the executive head in dealing with firecrackers.
- Failing to ensure that a written authority to deal with fireworks from the Executive head is not contravened.
