Firearms recovery effort in Gauteng sees Over 400 weapons seized

Gauteng police are intensifying their efforts against illegal firearms, retrieving over 400 weapons and around 7581 rounds of ammunition in the last fortnight.

On 9 August 2023, a joint effort involving Ekurhuleni District Crime Intelligence, Ekurhuleni District Trio Task Team, Bad Boys Security, and Blue Hawk Tactical commenced.

The joint team acted on information about illegal miners allegedly in possession of an unlicensed firearm in the Primrose area.

According to SAPS,these impressive recoveries stem from daily crime prevention actions and intelligence-driven operations, including the ongoing Operation Shanela.

FIREARMS AND 13 BAGS OF GOLD BEARING SOIL FOUND

Acting on this lead, authorities arrested four suspects who were found with a rifle, ammunition, and 13 bags of gold-bearing soil.

All four individuals were arrested and charged with unlicensed possession of firearms and gold-bearing material.

One suspect even attempted to bribe the police for his release, according to the statement.

In another incident within,Putfontein members successfully recovered a firearm with a filed-off serial number following a lead.

Two suspects were arrested and charged with unlicensed firearm possession.

PLANNED BUSINESS ROBBERY INTERCEPTED

In Johannesburg, Soweto Crime Intelligence and Flying Squad responded to a tip about a planned business robbery in Diepkloof.

They intercepted the suspects’ identified vehicle, apprehending three occupants. Upon searching, they found an altered revolver and ammunition.

All three were arrested for possessing unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and the involved vehicle was confiscated.

Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela, commended both law enforcement officers and private security companies involved in the Eyes and Ears E(2) project for their swift response to community tips and intelligence information.

“Recoveries of these firearms and ammunition proves that together we can fight against crime and make our province a safe place to be,” said Mawela.
