Fire at Tshwane’s K3 substation disrupts power supply in some areas

On 15 February, a fire erupted at Rosslyn’s K3 substation in Tshwane, leading to power supply disruptions in surrounding areas.

In the early hours of 15 February, a fire broke out at the K3 substation in Rosslyn, belonging to the City of Tshwane, following an attempted theft of an 11kv cable, causing power supply interruptions.

The blaze caused severe damage to the substation’s switchgear panels. This led to a disruption in power supply to several factories and residential areas in the vicinity.

Affected areas in Tshwane

The affected areas include Nkwe Estate, Rosslyn Gardens, factories on Tungsten and Platina streets, and the offices of the Automotive Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC).

Yesterday, technicians were on-site assessing the extent of the damage. They were also exploring options to restore power to the affected customers.

“The estimated time of restoration (ETR) will only be communicated once the team has assessed the extent of the damage and sourced the needed material for repairs,” said the City of Tshwane.

The City of Tshwane expressed regret for the inconvenience caused by this incident of vandalism to the city’s infrastructure. They assured customers that updates on the situation would be provided as developments unfold.
