The Freedom Front Plus (FFP) has chosen its long-serving Member of Parliament (MP), Corne Mulder as the party’s premier candidate in the Western Cape ahead of the 29 May 2elections.

Mulder, also the party’s leader in the province, says that he’s certain there will be a coalition government in the Western Cape after the elections.

POSSIBILITY OF A COALITION GOVERNMENT AT NATIONAL LEVEL

Mulder said the possibility of a coalition government at national level was also foreseeable through the Multi-Party Charter, according to TimesLive.

“At this stage, it’s difficult, and maybe premature, to say exactly how this will play out,” said Mulder, who has been an MP for 36 years. He wouldn’t rule out a return to parliament if the premiership challenge doesn’t go well, even if it’s in a different role,” said Mulder.

On Wednesday, Mulder said he was convinced there would be a coalition government in the Western Cape after the elections.
“At this stage, it’s difficult to give a final answer, but I think options are open. But in the meantime, all my attention will be campaigning for the FF Plus in the Western Cape,” Mulder said.

‘IF DA LOSES THREE SEATS IT WILL NEED FF PLUS TO HAVE MAJORITY’

“If we succeed, the Freedom Front Plus will be part of that government. And we will obviously have to deploy people to that government who can do the job,” he added.

Mulder said that of the 28 political parties contesting elections in the province, the only serious contenders were the Patriotic Alliance, Rise Mzansi, ActionSA, and the People’s Movement for Change.

He said if the DA, which has 24 seats in the 42-seat legislature, loses three seats, it will mean a 50/50 split between the majority party and the opposition. “It will need the FF Plus to have the majority to govern,” said the veteran politician.

Mulder noted the FFP was willing to partner with smaller parties with a track record of being reliable coalition partners.
