In a relentless effort to maintain public safety during the festive season, South African police(SAPS) have intensified anti-crime operations, resulting in over 70 000 arrests.

Police Minister Bheki Cele emphasized the commitment of law enforcement, implementing the SAPS festive season operational plan.

70 000 ARRESTS MADE DURING FESTIVE SEASON OPERATION

Cele revealed staggering statistics, stating that from October 15 to date, police have apprehended over 70 000 suspects.

The crimes, include 560 murder suspects, 604 attempted murder suspects, and 470 rape suspects.

The crackdown extended to property crimes, with 408 individuals arrested for attempted business break-ins, and 561 people detained for possessing firearms and ammunition.

Undocumented individuals faced legal consequences, as over 11 000 were arrested, and deportation efforts are underway.

Despite festive celebrations, a concerning number of motorists engaged in risky behaviour.

Since October 15, police nabbed 4,488 drunk drivers and arrested 2,500 individuals for public drinking in December.

Law enforcement is taking a hard stance against liquor-related crimes, with 17 844 arrests for illegal liquor trading and 6 410 fines issued for non-compliance at liquor outlets.

Law enforcement is taking a hard stance against liquor-related crimes, with 17 844 arrests for illegal liquor trading and 6 410 fines issued for non-compliance at liquor outlets.

Additionally, 13 244 suspects have been arrested for drug-related crimes during this festive season.

IILEGAL MMINING IN GAUTENG ADDRESSED

Minister Cele highlighted successful operations, including addressing illegal mining in Gauteng, resulting in the arrest of over 300 undocumented foreign nationals suspected of being illegal miners.

While acknowledging persistent crime levels, Cele emphasized the impact of intensified police interventions, reducing the space for criminals to operate.
