South African festivals are happening across the country. With the variety on offer, these events will cater to most people’s expectations.

Those who want to do something different from going to the movies or the mall, have a variety of events to choose from.

Festivals: February to May

Up the Creek is making its return from 8 to 11 February 2024. It will be the first festival since 2020. It is the second-longest running outdoor music festival in South Africa. The event will take place on the banks of the Breede River, outside Swellendam in the Western Cape.

For adventurous eaters, Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape is hosting a one-day Chilli Festival on 23 March 2024. It will include a chilli eating competition, a hot chip challenge, and many other activities.

Looking to experience some theatre, shopping, and a lively atmosphere? The Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees from 23 to 31 March 2024 in Oudtshoorn will offer visitors a creative carnival with visual and performing arts.

For booklovers, the Franschhoek Literary Festival promises to be a treat. The festival takes place from 17 to 19 May 2024 in Franschhoek in the Western Cape.

June to September

The Grahamstown National Arts Festival is a hotspot for art enthusiasts. The event will take place from 20 to 30 June 2024 in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape. It will include a variety of options for both theatre and music lovers.

The theme for this year’s Knysna Oyster Festival is “Have a whale of a time”. The festival will be held from 21 to 30 June 2024. The festival coincides with the whale watching season in Knysna in the Western Cape.

Another Franschhoek event is the Bastille Festival scheduled for 15 to 16 July 2024. Here visitors can get a taste of France in the heart of South Africa. The village dresses up in French flair. A food and wine marquee nestled against the historic Huguenot Monument, is the main attraction.

If you are looking for a lively street vibe packed with activities, the Hermanus Whale Festival should do the trick. Hermanus in the Western Cape is known as a whale watching location. The festival which runs from 28 to 30 September 2024, includes a variety of shorefront events such as live shows and film festivals.

October to December

For those looking to rejuvenate the mind, body, and spirit, Freaky Forest Fiesta from 22 to 24 November 2024 might be the answer. Activities at this festival include yoga, meditation, art, and dance workshops. The event is planned to take place on the Tannenhof Guest Farm in the Eastern Cape.
