Former FeesMustFall leader Bonginkosi Khanyile has given the Vice Chancellor of Witwatersrand University (WITS) a day to respond to his letter demanding proper student engagement.

WITS STUDENT FIGHT FOR REGISTRATION FEES

The students and management of WITS have been at loggerheads over the registration policy which apparently deprives students with historical debt from registering for free.

It is reported that the students are demanding the university to allow those owing R150 000 or less to register for the 2023 academic year.

WHAT THE SRC DEMANDS FROM VARSITY MANAGEMENT

Fall out on this engagement has led to violent protest action led by the Student Representative Council (SRC). The aggrieved students have taken to the streets and blockaded roads to voice their demands. It has also come to light that they have also threatened to burn down some of buildings at the university should their demand fall on deaf ears.

Political parties such as the ATM have supported the students over their demands. The latest supporter has been none other than the FeesMustFall poster child Bonginkosi Khanyile whose influential campaign made history in 2015.

WHY FEESMUSTFALL LEADER IS TRIGGERED

With free education remaining as one of the causes he champions, the former FeesMust Fall activist has written to the WITS VC over this burning matter.

“I have been trying to get hold of Vice-Chancellor and Principal of Wits – University of the Witwatersrand Professor Vilakazi, with an intention to contribute meaningful in resolving the continued University crisis,” he said.

“I wrote to him again this morning. The below letter is not only emailed to him but hand delivered too.”

He added: “If he fails to meet and engage we will have no choice but to go join students on the picket lines. The demands of students are not only genuine but historically legitimate too. They must be listened to with the intention to resolve them in the best way possible. I gave him a day to respond”.
