President Cyril Ramaphosa’s office has reportedly acknowledged receipt of a letter written by the Democratic Alliance asking him to consider a Commission of Inquiry into farm murders and attacks.

Farm murders and attacks are reported almost daily across the country, especially in Gauteng as per AfriForum 2022 annual report.

WOULD A COMMISSION OF INQUIRY SOLVE FARM MURDERS?

The DA said a Commission of Inquiry will allow for a thorough investigation into the underlying causes of these crimes and provide recommendations for comprehensive measures to safeguard our farming communities.

The party said it remains perplexed that nothing is being done to protect farmers from criminal elements and to deal with the scourge decisively.

“If we continue to pursue rural crime prevention as a separate activity from the food production value chain, we will continue to expose our farmers and rural residents to criminal networks. It doesn’t help that government is only good at making promises on rural safety but has repeatedly failed to follow this up with tangible action,” said DA Shadow Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Noko Masipa.

Masipa said when Police Minister Bheki Cele presented his Budget Vote there was no mention of any progress made on rural safety or rural crime in his speech despite having recently developed a Rural Safety Strategy.
