Another horrific act of violence has taken place on a Western Cape farm, with an elderly couple brutally attacked while visiting their son at the Klipheuwel farm in Moorreesburg on Tuesday.

Tragically, 65-year-old Ingrid Koch suffered fatal injuries, while her husband suffered severe stab wounds and remains in hospital receiving treatment.

Farm attack in Moorreesburg leads to death of elderly woman

The South African Police Service (SAPS) were able to apprehend a 34-year old suspect after responding to the incident, and said in a statement that they are continuing to investigate the circumstances that led to the despicable attack.

“The circumstances surrounding an incident on a farm in Hopefield Road, Moorreesburg yesterday at about 10:40am, where a 65-year-old female and a 69-year-old were attacked are under investigation,” said Sergeant Wesley Twigg.

He said that when Moorreesburg police were called to the crime scene, they made the grim discovery of the two victims with stab wounds to their bodies.

“The female victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel and the male victim was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment,” he said.

DA condemn ‘senseless attacks’

Cases of murder and attempted murder were opened for investigation, and the male suspect was arrested shortly thereafter after a coordinated response was initiated to track down the culprit.

He will appear in court once he has been charged.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) have strongly condemned the incident, saying that SAPS must “deal with this matter decisively so that the perpetrator is brought to book and to send a strong message that these senseless attacks will not be tolerated.”

“Across the country, rural communities are under siege due to heinous acts of violence, yet, Police Minister Bheki Cele has not shown any sign of remorse for the plight of farmers and farmworkers as he has failed to properly implement the rural safety plan,” said Andricus van der Westhuizen, the DA’s Western Cape Spokesperson on Agriculture.

“Rural communities are at great risk of crime due to their isolation from police stations. This requires a greater need for special police resources to combat farm attacks and killings as well as the high incidents of other criminal activities that negatively affect farming.”

“The DA extends its deepest condolences to the Koch family and we hope and pray for the speedy recovery of Mr Koch,” he added.
