sheepPolice in Lothair, South Africa, have arrested a man after he was stopped in a Toyota Tazz vehicle with 20 stolen sheep crammed in the back. Speaking to The Citizen, Mpumalanga police chief Lt-Gen Thulani Ntobela said the man could be further charged with animal cruelty after 16 of the animals died of suffocation. “Twenty sheep in a Toyota Tazz? How on earth can somebody do such a cruel act? This is quite strange and must be condemned in the strongest terms,” Ntobela said.

NBC news reported on a similar story in Hastings, New Zealand last month when a Ford Laser hatchback was stopped with ten stolen hog-tied sheep crammed in the back. There were also four men in the vehicle. All of the sheep were returned unharmed, though this was not the case during a similar heist in 2010 when a four-door Mazda saloon was stopped in Flaxmere with 14 sheep in it: two had died.
