WATCH: ‘Drunk’ eThekwini Municipality employee filmed sleeping at shopping mall

In a video, a presumably drunk employee was seen sleeping in an eThekwini Municipality vehicle with alcohol next to him at Watercrest Mall.

The eThekwini Municipality says it will not accept the abuse of resources after an employee was filmed in a municipal vehicle sleeping with a bottle of alcohol at Watercrest Mall.

The municipality said it is shocked and appalled by the incident in the viral video.

In a brief statement, eThekwini Municipality said its City Manager, Musa Mbhele, has made it clear that service delivery is an apex priority and that the abuse of municipal resources under any circumstances, and in any way, shape, or form, will not be accepted.

Furthermore, the vehicle in the viral video is safely parked in the Parks depot.

“However, as a matter of principle, the municipality does not discuss internal investigations and employer-employee-related matters with a third party,” the municipality said.

POLICE OFFICER FILMED USING STATE VEHICLE

Meanwhile, the South African Police Service (SAPS) also confirmed that it is investigating an on-duty officer using a state vehicle for personal use.

A video of a police officer buying grain from a civilian for personal use has been widely circulated on social media.

Police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said a preliminary investigation has revealed that the member is a Sergeant attached to the Durban Harbour.

Mathe said the SAPS views such action in a serious light.

“Resources such as state vehicle’s are there to ensure optimal running and functioning of the service and to service our communities,” Mathe said.
