EThekwini Mayor urges PhD holders to share expertise and help the Metro

EThekwini Mayor challenged the 40 Municipal employees who recently graduated with their PhDs to rise to the occasion and produce research.

EThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has urged PhD holders in the metro to lead the municipality on a development path.

ETHEKWINI MAYOR REQUESTS INPUTS FROM PHD HOLDERS

Kaunda challenged the 40 Municipal employees who have recently graduated with their PhDs to rise to the occasion and produce research that will help deal with challenges experienced in the City.

Mayor Kaunda was speaking at a Mayoral Breakfast that was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) today, 22 November.

The event celebrated the academic achievements of 40 eThekwini Municipality team members who have obtained doctoral degrees in various fields of study.

WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FROM KAUNDA

Mayor Kaunda said obtaining a PhD is a result of hard work. He told attendees that society looks up to them as graduates to help find solutions to a myriad of challenges.

“I encourage you to use the knowledge that you have acquired to contribute to making Durban the most caring and livable city. As a Municipality that strives to become world-class, we hope that as knowledge generators, you will lead this City on a new development path and solve the perennial challenges of poverty, unemployment, and inequality,” he said.

Mayor Kaunda also told the graduates that they are better placed to provide solutions that are thoroughly researched and scientific-based.

DURBAN INSPECTED PRIOR TO BUSY SEASON

Meanwhile, after the delectable breakfast, EThekwini Mayor Kaunda conducted site visits in the central business district and along the beachfront to assess the City’s state of readiness for the festive season.
He appealed to officials to ensure that law enforcement officers maintain high visibility at tourism sites as well as at shopping malls and places of entertainment.

“Roving teams will also be on the ground to keep the City clean. Other service delivery that will be taking place includes the repairing of burst pipes, fixing water leaks and enforcing the Problem Buildings By-law,” he assured.
