EThekwini Mayor inspects CCTV cameras to tackle crime in Durban

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda is confident that the City will win the war against crime after upgrade of CCTV cameras.

EThekwini Mayor Councillor Mxolisi Kaunda is confident that the City will win the war against crime following his inspection in-loco of the City’s Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) camera control room today, Tuesday, 5 December.

ETHEKWINI MAYOR KAUNDA GIVES INSIGHT ON THE CCTV CAMERAS

During his visit, Mayor Kaunda received a detailed demonstration of how the cameras will assist in tackling crime in the Durban central business district.

Ethekwini Mayor’s visit comes after the project to repair and upgrade CCTV cameras, which started in September, was completed.

Mayor Kaunda said the City met its target of completing repairs of CCTV cameras by 30 November.

“We are pleased with the work undertaken and have ensured that all CCTV cameras in the city centre are in operation ahead of the festive season,” he added.

SURVEILLANCE CAMERAS TO BE ASSISTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT

With the city centre under constant surveillance, together with the high visibility of law enforcement, criminal activities are set to reduce during the festive season and beyond.

It is reported that the new CCTV installations have been made in critical areas and crime hotspots.

“The business sector also stands to benefit as they can tap in by integrating their cameras to ours and vice versa to view a criminal incident. The roll-out plan will see CCTV cameras expanding to residential areas, including townships and suburbs. We also call on communities to work with the City and all law enforcement agencies in the fight against crime,” EThekwini Mayor Kaunda explained.

PHD HOLDERS URGED TO LEAD ON A DEVELOPMENT PATH

Meanwhile, the EThekwini Mayor Mxolisi Kaunda has urged PhD holders in the metro to lead the municipality on a development path.
Kaunda challenged the 40 Municipal employees who have recently graduated with their PhDs to rise to the occasion and produce research that will help deal with challenges experienced in the City.

Mayor Kaunda was speaking at a Mayoral Breakfast that was held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre (ICC) on 22 November.
The event celebrated the academic achievements of 40 eThekwini Municipality team members who have obtained doctoral degrees in various fields of study.
