Eskom’s recent announcement about the re-implementation of Stage 6 load shedding in South Africa, starting at noon today, was not unexpected.

Critics argue that President Ramaphosa and his Electricity Ministers, including Gordhan, Ramokgopa, and Mantashe, have failed to address the ongoing electricity crisis.

Despite Minister Ramokgopa’s promises, Eskom’s energy availability factor hovers near 60%, below the 70% government target.

The Energy Action Plan to prevent load-shedding shows minimal advancement.

Eskom implemented Stage 6 power cuts for the first time since September as the power utility confronts generation capacity constraints and diesel shortages.

Eskom needs to take 6,000 megawatts off line to prevent a total collapse of the grid.

The pressing task of tackling the generation shortfall becomes crucial, said the DA. Despite Minister Ramokgopa’s promises, Eskom’s energy availability factor hovers near 60%, below the 70% government target.

Escalating Concerns Amidst South Africa’s Power Crisis

“Mantashe’s failure to launch Bid Window 7 of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) amplifies concerns.”

Additionally, the eagerly awaited updated Integrated Resource Plan, South Africa’s electricity generation roadmap, remains pending despite repeated assurances.

Recognizing the vital role of independent power producers and the private generation, it is stressed that the ANC government’s corruption, cadre deployment, maladministration, and incompetence worsen the crisis.

Calls for new leadership and entrusting a party with a proven track record to handle the electricity crisis gain traction.

The DA affirms its commitment to ensuring a secure, sustainable, and affordable electricity supply for all South Africans, questioning the current government’s capability to address the nation’s power challenges.
