Eskom quietly extends Medupi and Kusile deadline… again

Nope, Eskom’s two largest and most important power stations won’t be online as their completion deadlines were quietly moved a year in advance, yet again.

Electricity expert Chris Yellend has picked up on a sneaky little change in Eskom’s plans to complete the country’s new power plants. Yellend spotted the discrepancy in a recent presentation by Eskom.

Medupi was initially supposed to start producing power back in 2011, then 2013 and now it’ll be fully operational in 2020, a year late.

Kusile on the other hand was supposed to go live in 2018, but has now been scheduled to power up its final generator in 2022.

These two power stations were supposed to be South Africa’s saving grace, but instead they’ve been nothing but a headache to the government, Eskom and the South African people. Even so, Eskom CEO Brian Molefe is convinced that the supplier will meet all the nation’s requirements and that we’ll be loadshedding-free until at least March next year.

We’ll just have to wait and see… and then wait some more.
