Electricity Minister clarifies stage 6 load shedding causes

Today, Electricity Minister Ramokgopa addressed the media, explaining the recent stage 6 load shedding escalation across the country.

Electricity Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa addressed the media today, shedding light on the recent stage 6 escalation in load shedding across the country.

He attributed the sudden increase to Eskom’s intensified maintenance operations.

Speaking passionately about the state of the grid, Ramokgopa highlighted the necessity of the undertaken measures.

Stage 6 load shedding implemented yesterday

Just yesterday, Eskom rolled out stage 6 load shedding, sending shockwaves through communities already grappling with power shortages.

“Investing in meticulous maintenance now is crucial for ensuring the long-term stability and performance of our power infrastructure,” Ramokgopa emphasised.

“While we recognise the inconvenience, it’s imperative that we prioritise the health of our grid.”

Ramokgopa acknowledged the short-term disruptions caused by heightened load shedding but stressed the importance of focusing on the bigger picture.

He explained that recent failures in power units during November had put strain on the system, necessitating the move to stage six load shedding.

Confidence in post-maintenance power stability

However, he confidently expressed that once maintenance completes, the units will operate more reliably.

“We’re facing challenges, but we’re committed to seeing this through for the benefit of all South Africans,” Ramokgopa affirmed.

“Our aim is to build a power infrastructure that is resilient and capable of meeting the nation’s needs now and in the future.”
