Elderly couple shot at, house set alight by suspects who demanded car keys

An elderly couple in Hlokozi, KZN was allegedly shot at by suspects who demanded keys to their car. Their house was also set alight.

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Social Development has dispatched social workers to offer psychosocial support to an elderly couple which was shot and their house and car were torched in Hlokozi, Nyavini village, in Umzumbe Local Municipality, KwaZulu-Natal.

ELDERLY COUPLE SHOT AT IN HLOKOZI

KZN Social Development MEC Khoza condemned the incident and emphasised that senior citizens are among the most vulnerable members of society and it is everyone’s responsibility to safeguard their safety, well-being and dignity. 

Khoza urged law enforcement agencies to initiate a comprehensive investigation into this incident. She said it is vital that every possible effort is made to identify and apprehend the perpetrators responsible for this heinous act. 

“We have full confidence that the law enforcement agencies will exhaust all available resources to swiftly resolve this case and ensure that justice is served,” she said.

The MEC said they will spare no effort in providing the necessary support and assistance to the elderly couple during this challenging time. 

A team of social workers has been dispatched to visit the affected family, offering psycho-social support, trauma debriefing and trauma containment.
