The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), on Thursday morning, met with the management of multinational goods company Unilever regarding the racially offensive hair campaign put out by one of its subsidiary products TRESemmé South Africa.
After retailer Clicks posted the hair campaign on social media, there was an uproar, to say the least. The images labelled white women’s hair as “normal” and black women’s hair as “dry, damaged and dull”. Following a week of protests and EFF members shutting down Clicks stores across the province, the party together with Unilever had a sit down to resolve the issue.
Firstly, the EFF and Unilever agreed that the advert was offensive and racist. It, however, could not agree on the publishing of the names of those who were responsible for the advert.
“Moreover, the director involved in the campaign has since left the company and the country. Unilever has made a commitment that following its internal investigations, the necessary disciplinary action will be taken against those remaining in the company in line with its policies,” the EFF said in a statement.
Following a robust discussion between the EFF and Unilever, the parties have agreed on the following;
“In line with the above, the EFF and Unilever have put the matter in question to rest,” it said.
“We have agreed to hold further discussions on transformation within Unilever relating to procurement, empowerment, employment equity and localisation,” it added.
On Thursday morning, both Makro and Dis-Chem announced that it would be removing TRESemmé products from its shelves. This comes after Clicks, Checkers and Pick N Pay and Woolworths did the same.
Early on Thursday morning, Makro short and sweet tweeted saying; “Makro SA has removed Tresemmé from sale at all stores.”
Also on Thursday morning, Dis-Chem responded to another tweet saying that it could confirm the removal of TRESemmé products.
“We have confirmed that all TRESemmé products have been withdrawn from our shelves. The decision was taken on Tuesday and this has been implemented across our stores nationally,” it said.
