Yes, you read it right! The EFF mayor, Leonard Makena, has reported just been elected in the Thembelihle Municipality in the Northern Cape, which includes the whites-only town of Orania.
According to a report by the SABC, the Freedom Front Plus, the DA, and the Siyathemba Community Movement voted with the EFF to relegate the ANC to the opposition benches on Friday afternoon.
Earlier this week, an EFF first-ever Municipal Mayor was elected to public office – some eight years after the party first formed. Selloane Motjeane was elected to rule over Metsimaholo in Free State, essentially the Red Berets got the better of the hung council.
But this did not last long, Motjeane, resigned from her position of mayor in Metsimaholo, Free State – just three days after taking the job.
Social media was oddly quiet on Friday evening after the news broke that Makena, has reportedly been elected as mayor in the Thembelihle Municipality in the Northern Cape, which includes the whites-only town of Orania.
The EFF, Julius Malema and Floyd Shivambu are yet to confirm.
During elections this year there were no surprises in the small town of Orania. No votes for the ANC, no votes for the EFF, and no votes for the Patriotic Alliance. The Orania Town Hall ballot, rather predictably, was only going one way – and the FF Plus has stormed to a massive majority in this region.
As well as hosting their individual Representative Council ballot, the Town Hall vote brings in political parties who are competing on a national level. Orania and the FF Plus have a very comfortable relationship together, given that the party openly supports the whites-only town in its quest for self-determination.
In total, there were seven parties to choose from on the ballot, but only three received any support. The DA came second, after securing 32 votes and 10.6% of the ballot. The ACDP finished in third place, with a meagre five votes. But, after securing 265 votes out of a possible 302, the FF Plus romped home with 87.75% of public support.
