This follows after South African activists on Saturday, 15 May 2021 – during celebrations to mark Nakba Day – called on the government to take action against Israel occupation of Palestinian land.

South African condemns Israel’s attacks on Palestine

The South African government on Friday condemned Israel’s attacks on Palestine, referring to it as a “stark violation of international law”.

The government furthermore said Israel’s attack was carried out in total disregard of the United Nations Security Council Resolutions, (UNSC) including Resolutions 446 (1979) and 2334 (2016).

The resolutions “explicitly call for an end to Israeli occupation and the fulfilment of the rights of the Palestinian people, including to self-determination and independence,” the government said Friday, 14 May.

International reaction

The UAE’s national carrier confirmed on Monday that Etihad Airways would be suspending flights to Israel as well after the main airport near Tel Aviv has come under retaliatory rocket fire.

In addition, the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken requested a “justification” from Israel for an airstrike on media building in Gaza, including Al Jazeera and Associated Press offices.

Blinken refused to comment on the legitimacy of the airstrike, adding that “Israel has a special responsibility to protect civilians in the course of its self-defence, and that most certainly includes journalists”.
