Two elderly people who are believed to have shared a home burnt to death in a shack fire in Nomzamo, Eastern Cape, on Saturday night, 4 February, said the South African Police Service (SAPS).

ELDERY PERSONS DIE IN EASTERN CAPE SHACK FIRE

Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Namhla Mdleleni said the authorities were called to the scene and found a shack engulfed in flames in Nomzamo, Mlungisi.

“After the fire was extinguished, two bodies of a man aged 90 and an 82-year-old woman were found in the embers,” said the police spokesperson.

The victims’ identities are being withheld until the formal identification process is dealt with. The cause of the fatal shack fire is yet to be established, and the local police are investigating an inquest docket.

In an unrelated incident in the Eastern Cape, about 49 homesteads were burnt down in Port St Johns in January. The provincial police said the attack could be related to ongoing stock theft and factional battles in the area.
