SAPS management in the Eastern Cape has intensified efforts to enhance policing standards in traditional initiation schools.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Management in the Eastern Cape has intensified efforts to enhance policing standards in traditional initiation schools across the province.

This initiative has yielded positive outcomes. Resulting in the apprehension of five counterfeit traditional surgeons since the commencement of the summer initiation season.

How old are the arrested individuals?

The arrested individuals, aged between 23 and 35, remain in custody, with a total of eight criminal cases currently under investigation.

Task teams, comprising members from Visible Policing, Detectives, and various stakeholders such as the Department of Health, COGTA, and NGOs, have been deployed in all eight districts.

These teams actively monitor initiation schools. Ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and laws concerning traditional male circumcision.

Lt Gen Nomthetheleli Mene, the Provincial Commissioner, issued a warning to parents, emphasising that these laws mandate their involvement in the initiation process.

“We are warning parents that these laws are also compelling them to be involved during the process of initiation. Non-compliance could lead to prosecution”, she said.

The SAPS remains committed to maintaining a vigilant presence in initiation schools. Safeguarding the well-being of initiates and upholding the integrity of cultural practices.
