A light magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported in parts of Johannesburg, in Gauteng on Tuesday evening. Did you feel it?

A light magnitude 3.2 earthquake was reported near Johannesburg in Gauteng on Tuesday evening. 

EARTHQUAKE RATTLED GAUTENG ON TUESDAY EVENING

According to Volcano Discovery, a light magnitude 3.2 earthquake hit 8.7 km away from Westonaria, Gauteng, on Tuesday evening. 

“The quake had a very shallow depth of 5 km (3.1 mi) and was felt widely in the area.”

Volcano Discovery said.

THE EARTHQUAKE WAS FELT WIDELY IN THE AREA

It furthermore said the exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the earthquake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

“Towns or cities near the epicenter where the earthquake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Maile (pop. 10,000) located 40 km from the epicenter, and Rustenburg (pop. 124,100) 50 km away. The quake was probably not felt in Koster (pop. 12,100, 57 km away) and Zeerust (pop. 17,700, 84 km away).”

THE EARTHQUAKE WAS REPORTED AN HOUR AGO 

It is believed residents and authorities are assessing the situation for any potential impact on infrastructure or safety.

The majority of reports of rattles came from Johannesburg (68 reports), in Gauteng in 34 km distance east of the epicenter, Krugersdorp.

Further details are awaited as experts and officials work to gather more information about the earthquake.
