Law enforcement in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, has been applauded for the stellar collaborative work they displayed in executing one of the biggest drug busts in the province.

Durban police bust R21 million worth of Mandrax

A joint collaboration between the Durban Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (the Hawks) and the Metro Police Department yielded positive results when a property on The Avenue East Street, in Prospecton, Durban, was searched for drugs.

According to popular crime reporter @crimeairnetwork, Durban police confirmed that the street value of the Mandrax seized during the bust was estimated at R21 million.

While the war on drugs is no easy feat, police have been applauded for removing a sizeable portion of illicit substances off the street, something that will surely hurt the syndicate.

About 38km away, in Umhlanga, another big drug bust was achieved by Durban police last week. On Wednesday 29 January, the Hawks confirmed the arrest of a suspect who was found to be dealing drugs at a flat in Umhlanga.

As reported by IOL News, the operation was helped by the tip-off authorities received about illicit activity at the apartment block.

“Members received information about a suspect who was dealing in drugs and an intensive investigation was conducted. Police pounced on his premises unexpectedly and a search was conducted.

“During the search 15 136 heroin tablets, 2.6kg of heroin powder, 2 669 mandrax tablets and empty capsules,” Durban police spokesperson Captain Simphiwe Mhlongo noted in a statement.

The street value of the drugs was estimated at around R1-million, another huge bust that negatively affects the drug syndicate’s business.

“Members from the forensic science laboratory were immediately invited to process the crime scene. The suspect was subsequently placed under arrest and charged for dealing, as well as possession of drugs,” Mhlongo added.
