Swim at your own risk in Durban beaches these holidays as some have been reportedly CLOSED due to the constant E.coli problem.
Most bathers will be left disappointed better yet than swimming in contaminated sea waters with high levels of e.Coli across eThekwini’s major beaches.
The affected beaches include Bronze Beach, Umhlanga Main, Westbrook, Umdloti Main, Reunion, Warner, Winklespruit.
These beaches are no stranger to being closed to the public after a series of e. Coli-positive cases and health scares, which were dismissed by the municipality.
The beaches have been operating uninterrupted since last year’s festive season, however, things seem to have changed.
The following beaches were open in December: Point, uShaka, Wedge, North, Battery, Bay of Plenty, Pipeline, Toti Main, Warner and Umgababa. In addition, eThekwini Municipality also opened Country Club, Winkelespruit and Anstey’s beaches.
Previously, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson, Msawakhe Mayisela said the decision to open beaches was taken after experts conducted water tests which confirmed that beach water quality had improved to an acceptable standard.

He added that water quality at Umdloti, Laguna and Bronze beaches was at an acceptable standard but would remain closed as per directive from the Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs.
“The City is constantly monitoring water quality at all beaches to ensure the safety of residents and visitors,” Mayisela previously said.
With the closure of some Durban beaches, one wonders whether all 21 swimming pools are open.
The City’s 21 swimming pools are Rainham, Durban North, Pipeline Paddling, Tiger Rocks, Anstey’s, Westville, Kings Park Indoor, Kings Park Outdoor, Stanmore, Umlazi D, L.T King, Bayview, Arena Park, Alex Bulley, Lamontville, Lahee Park, Ntuzuma, Sutton Park, South Beach Paddling, Tesoriere and Umgababa.
