A 42-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Middleburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 21 October, after he was caught in possession of rhino horns worth millions in Mpumalanga early on Thursday.

Members of the Middelburg K9 Unit stopped a white Toyota Quantum vehicle with Mpumalanga registration plates next to the toll plaza on the N4 at approximately 2:00 as part of their normal patrol duties.

“There were no passengers in the minibus. After police introduced themselves to the driver, they requested to search the vehicle,” said Brigadier Selvy Mohlala.

During the search, police found black plastic bags with two rhino horns hidden in the bonnet. The driver could not provide a satisfactory explanation and was arrested and charged with possession of rhino horns.

The police said there is a possibility an additional charge of contravening the National Environmental Management Biodiversity Act could be added.

Mpumalanga police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Semakaleng Manamela, welcomed the driver’s arrest and recovery of the rhino horns.
