The Gauteng Health Department has declared these areas red zones after several attacks on paramedics over the weekend.

If you live in these areas, you need to know that your area has been declared a red zone after paramedics were attacked recently.

The latest attacks bring to 14 the number of incidents to date in 2022 alone.

According to Gauteng MEC for Health and Wellness Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko the Gauteng Emergency Medical Services from Odi Base and patients were robbed of their belongings, including medical equipment, over the weekend.

“In one incident, two EMS personnel were robbed at gunpoint while responding to a case of difficulty in breathing at Lebanon in Winterveld just after midnight on Friday, 16 December 2022.

“The crew was robbed of cell phones and personal belongings, including an electrocardiogram (ECG) and patient monitor equipment.”

A CREW AND PATIENT WERE ROBBED AT GUNPOINT

In another incident on Saturday, 17 December 2022, a crew from the same Odi Base was robbed by armed attackers.

“The crew and the patient were robbed of their cellphones at the gate of Boekenhout Clinic as they were about to transport the patient.” 

Community members were urged to come forward with information that can assist the department and law enforcement agencies in apprehending perpetrators of the attacks. 

THE LATEST ATTACKS BRING TO 14 THE NUMBER OF INCIDENTS IN 2022

The department said the two incidents were reported at Mabopane Police Station.

“In the meantime, several areas in the province have been declared hotspots or red zones as they are deemed unsafe for emergency personnel. 

“EMS crews will only enter those areas accompanied by law enforcement agencies or security personnel. Attached is a list of the hotspots.”
