Devashnee Doorasamy: Durban man arrested on suspicion of murder

Devashnee Doorasamy’s murder sent shockwaves through South Africa. Authorities confirmed that her husband was arrested and appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court.

Devashnee Doorasamy, a 30-year-old former Durban-based Clarence primary school teacher and reality TV star, was allegedly murdered by her husband, Megan Doorasamy.

Her body was found in her Morningside apartment on 5 July; after she consumed a deadly anti-freeze and cranberry juice cocktail. The 29-year-old Meghan and Devashnee allegedly agreed to carry out a suicide pact.

As reported by IOL, Megan stayed with Devashnee’s body for four days before reporting her death to authorities. He intended to end his life at the Durban pier but handed himself over to the SAPS instead.

Meghan Doorasamy’s court appearance

Meghan appeared in the Durban Magistrates Court on 8 July on suspicion of murder, where he admitted to state prosecutor Calvin Govender that he and Devashnee made a suicide pact to escape their financial difficulties.

He claimed that Devashnee had passed away during the night. He remained with her body for 4 days and contemplated taking his life.

The court also heard that Megan had a jealous streak and forced Devashnee to quit her. Furthermore, he had tried to pawn her phone.

It is also suspected that Devashnee was the victim of domestic abuse. Investigating officers said her face was “beaten up.”

Further investigation revealed blood splattered on the bathroom floor.

Megan and Devashnee’s claim to fame

In 2017, Devashnee rose to fame when she married Megan on the popular reality show Married in a Flash. Couples on the reality show had three days and R75 000 to plan their dream wedding.

The episode aired footage of Devashnee blowing kisses at the camera while dancing to Love Is In The Air at their wedding reception. A source close to Devashnee said her personality changed after the wedding.

The childhood friend claimed that Devashnee “became fearful of greeting her friends,” that Megan was “very possessive over her and did not like her to speak to many people.” She friend added:

“She was jovial and like a sister to me. But, she completely changed once she met this guy. He was so jealous and obsessed with her. He even made her leave work because he did not want her to talk to male teachers.”

Timeline of Devashnee Doorasamy’s murder

  • 30 June 2019: Megan allegedly gave Devashnee the lethal cranberry and anti-freeze cocktail.
  • 1 July: Megan woke up the following morning and found Devashnee dead.
  • 5 July: Megan reported her death to authorities and drove to Durban Pier where he contemplated suicide. Instead, he handed himself in.
  • 8 July: Megan appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court where he refused bail and opted to stay in police custody until the next hearing. Court proceedings will resume 6 September.
