‘Say NO to pens down’- Education Department

Department of Education has raised safety concerns around young people attending pens down parties which celebrate the end of exams

Two days after Economic Freedom Fighters member of parliament Mbuyiseni Ndlozi announced the Red Berets are hosting a pens down party for matriculants and youth in Gauteng, the Department of Basic appear against such celebrations.

A pens down party is an end of school celebration, to commemorate the end of school exams.

In social media post on X- formerly Twitter- the government’s accounted shared a poster on behalf of the Department of Basic Education who warned of the possibilities of having unwanted and unsafe sex during these celebrations.

“#Pensdown celebrations can involve the use of drugs and alcohol, which can lead to incidents such as reckless sexual encounters. These celebrations may also lead to loss of lives. Choose to say NO!”

On of the largest of these festivals is the Rage Festival (matric rage) which takes place over 9 days in Ballito, Umhlanga and Durban which is attended by more than 13 000 youth between the ages of 18 and 25.

On Monday, Ndlozi announced their pens down party, which they have called a EFF voter registration bash for Gauteng youth.

The EFF has roped in popular artists to lure in potential young voters ahead of next years general elections.

The different venues include Zoo Lake, Gillooly’s Farm, Fountains Valley, Dick Fourie Stadium and Coronation Park, the parties are all taking part on the same day.

According to party posters some of the artists who will be performing includes, Papi Cooper, Blxckie, Kabza de Small and Young Stunna.
